It is quite a ways from Anchorage — being about 360 miles north — but the commute time for most people that live here is actually quite a bit shorter than many other cities in Alaska. It takes Fairbanks residents less than 15 minutes to get to work on average. The area also has a terrific climate with slightly colder winters and slightly warmer summers compared to other regions. In August and April, you can see the Aurora Borealis from Fairbanks.

Fairbanks Historical Record

Fairbanks bears the nickname the "Golden Heart City." This is not just due to the generosity and friendliness of the people that live there, it is also a reminder of how Fairbanks first began – as a settlement during the Gold Rush at the start of the 1900s. The Fort Knox Gold Mine is located here, and is one of the largest gold producers in the nation, as well as one of the oldest. The University of Alaska – Fairbanks is also located here, holding the distinction of the oldest university in Alaska still in operation, and is also the location of the popular Museum of the North.
