Homer has claimed the title of the Halibut fishing capital of the entire world, and this might be true. They claim that there are more Halibut caught there than any other place on the planet. Some of the other claims to fame that Homer has include being the birthplace of folk singer and songwriter Jewel, voiceover actor Tom Bodett, most famous for “Motel 6” advertisements on the radio and Olympian Tala O’Donnell. A popular place to visit has become a historic landmark – the Salty Dawg Saloon, which is right on the split, was created in 1957, but the building that it is located in has been around since 1897, and has been used as a grocery store, post office and schoolhouse among other things.

In the areas around Homer, there are many things of interest. There is a small area known as Clam Gulch which has the claim to fame of being a great place to dig up razor clams during the low tide. There is also a beautiful tourist area called Halibut Cove, located in such a place that you can only get there by boat. There is also the Kachemak Bay State Park which has beaches, ice fields, glaciers and gorgeous forests. There is also the community of Ninilchick which was established in the 1800’s prior to Alaska being purchased and Seldovia, another secluded area that is worth a visit.
