Homer Local Amenities

This city has a thriving art scene and is a popular spot for artists and writers, as well as for those who want to start or currently own an art gallery. There are also restaurants and various stores that all model the artistic style of the city. The Homer Split is a landmark formed by a glacier moraine that goes nearly five miles out into Kachemak Bay and is one of the most popular sites to visit and fish from. The northeast of Homer is home to the Kenai Mountains, and you can see the tops of the volcanoes when clouds are absent. Homer is also part of the Marine Highway.

Homer has claimed the title of the "Halibut fishing capital of the entire world," and this might be true. They claim that there are more Halibut caught there than any other place on the planet. Some of the other claims to fame that Homer has include being the birthplace of folk singer and songwriter Jewel, voice actor Tom Bodett, most famous for "Motel 6" advertisements on the radio, and Olympian Tela O'Donnell. A popular place to visit has become a historic landmark — the Salty Dawg Saloon, which is right on the split, was created in 1957. However, the building that it's located in has been around since 1897, and has been used as a grocery store, post office and schoolhouse.

In the areas around Homer real estate, there are many things of interest. There is a small area known as Clam Gulch which has the claim to fame of being a great place to dig up razor clams during the low tide. There is also a beautiful tourist area called Halibut Cove, located in such a place that you can only get there by boat. The Kachemak Bay State Park is here as well, which has beaches, ice fields, glaciers and gorgeous forests. In addition, the community of Ninilchick, established in the 1800's prior to Alaska being purchased, is here, as well as Seldovia, another secluded area that is worth a visit.
