Kenai Homes & Real Estate
Welcome to your best Kenai real estate resource. The city of Kenai sits at the mouth of the narrow Kenai River on the lush Kenai Peninsula. It's no accident that these three share the same name. Being the oldest city on the Peninsula and the oldest continually-inhabited European settlement in Alaska, Kenai's population of just under 7,500 certainly take pride in living here. The city celebrated its bicentennial in 1991, cementing Kenai's role as the heart of the peninsula's cultural and historical draw, and the gateway to great real estate. Kenai Community Highlights
- Famous for its sport fishing, a world-record 97 lb 4 oz king salmon was caught here in 1985, and eight of the ten largest king salmon caught in the world came from Kenai.
- A center for multiple industries: oil, natural gas, tourism, and commercial fishing all have a presence in Kenai.
- The local Kenai Visitors & Cultural Center showcases the town's ties to the Kachemak people, Dena'ina Athabaskan people, and early Russian settlers.
- During the summer, beluga whales can be seen migrating and feeding on local fish.
Kenai Local Amenities
If you are looking for real estate in Kenai, you might be curious about the industries that are present here. The town's name (and the other features that share the name) was derived from the Dena'ina word "kena," which describes the topographical features of the area. Oil and gas hold a large presence here, while other popular industries include commercial fishing, charter fishing, tourism and more. Massive oil infrastructure is located near Kenai, pumping out more than 42,000 barrels of oil per day.
Kenai is well-known for the fishing that happens here, particularly for salmon. That's because of the Kenai River, which empties into the Cook Inlet. There are also many other types of fish in the 82-mile river, including sockeye, coho, humpback and king salmon, which can get larger than 100 pounds. One of the interesting things about the area is that early summer sees the beluga whale migrating to the area to feed on the giant salmon; you can see them from Beluga Whale Lookout.
There are a number of attractions and benefits to living in Kenai homes for sale. You can visit Old Town Kenai and find buildings that have been around for decades or centuries, like the Holy Assumption of the Virgin Mary Russian Orthodox Church, one of only 48 historic landmarks in the state, and a replica of Fort Kenay where soldiers were stationed in the mid-1800s. Kenai also has a greatly informative visitors center and culture expo, which showcases artwork and historic exhibits and much more, all centered around local history.
Kenai Geographical Location
The cities and towns that are around Kenai houses for sale have many of the same benefits that the town does – the rural lifestyle located in the wilderness, while still being close enough to Anchorage to get there in thirty minutes by plane or three hours by car. The Chugach State Park is close to Kenai and the beaches that line the coast of the town are some of the most popular places to go during the summer. To the west, the coast very nearly reaches the islands that make up the state of Hawaii and there are no less than four active volcanoes nearby. Mount Redoubt is the most prominent of these and can easily be seen on a clear day.
