Palmer Local Amenities
Palmer is well-known for many things, one of them being the Alaska State Fair, which is held for 12 full days and has been going since 1936. The fair offers attendees many things to do, including a real Alaska rodeo, livestock shows and prizes, concerts and live music and one of the most looked-forward to events in Alaska — the giant cabbage weighing. There have been two world records for cabbage weight set here in the past. Palmer is also a record holder in many other vegetables, like kale, broccoli, turnips and more, so there must be something in the soil.
Another attraction offered by the city is the Palmer Museum of History and Art, a very popular place for residents from all over Alaska to visit. The Church of a Thousand Trees is also a well-known tourist attraction. Many of the residents that live in Palmer work there but some commute a short distance to Wasilla or Anchorage.
Palmer AK homes for sale are alongside the Matanuska River, and the Mat-Su region bears the name as a result. The Glenn Highway is nearby and is the road to Anchorage, just a 55-minute drive from Palmer. Hatcher Pass is also less than 15 miles away, where you gain entrance to the Independence Mine State Park, where the history of the area is celebrated and preserved. There are more than sixteen buildings still standing that have been cared for since the gold rush days of Alaska. Another feature of Palmer is the Musk Ox Farm, which has the only domestic herd of Musk Ox. It is a great place for adults and kids alike to visit.
Palmer Historical Record
The real estate in Palmer first began to gain popularity at the start of the Great Depression. There were around two hundred families — mostly farmers — living in Alaska after migrating from the Midwest. They were taking advantage of the New Deal relief program instituted by FDR. The farmers thought they might have trouble with agriculture at first, but it turned out that the glacial soil and the air made it perfect for farming. These days, Palmer produces three-quarters of the state's agricultural crop. During the summer crops in Palmer can get as much as twenty hours of sunlight, which could be why they are able to grow such huge vegetables.
