Throughout the town, you can find 24 attractions that are on the National Register of Historic Places, which is one-fourth of the register located in the entire state of Alaska. When Sitka began, it was the capital of the then Russian-owned America, until the United States bought it in 1867. However, there was still a lot of history before Russia colonized the region, especially from the Tingit people who were native to the region. Some of the historic places in Sitka include St. Michael's Cathedral, Sitka National Historic Park and the Russian Bishop's House.
