The area is well-known for the more than 80-mile Kenai River that runs through it. The river starts in the mountains to the east and empties into the Cook Inlet. This is one of the draws for visitors that come to the area, particularly in spring and summer. The salmon runs are extremely popular. Sockeye, coho and humpback salmon are all present during this time but what everyone is really going after is the king salmon which can get extremely large because the salmon in the Kenai River are in the ocean almost an extra year during their life.
Fisherman from the entire state will flock into Soldotna Alaska in order to catch the biggest king salmon and it is Alaska's biggest hotspot for sports fishing. The larger fish in Alaska get up to about 50 pounds, but the salmon in the Kenai River can get up to nearly 100. The largest salmon on record caught in the Kenai River was 97.2 pounds. It is on the wall at the Soldotna Visitors Center.
There are a whole lot of summer activities too, and one of those that is a favorite among visitors and locals is checking out the wildlife that you'll find alongside the Kenai River. You might come across wolves, bald eagles, bears, caribou and moose, among other Alaskan animals. Beluga whales have been spotted in the area as well. Many people enjoy watching the migratory birds that visit Kenai Flats.
